--it just occurred to me that I'm like three weeks behind in Merlin.

I should feel worse about that than I do :|

This is me, not telling you to catch-up. (I'm downloading today's episode and going, "...Eh, do I want to put myself through this?")

From: [identity profile] taelow.livejournal.com

That's basically what's kept me from watching the ones I HAVE downloaded. Even the Dragon makes it hard for me to care at this point and that's sad, because John Hurt :|

There are still some bits I like! I like Gawaine a lot. His nicely shampoo'd hair is great. Uther's also getting really good treatment this season, in my opinion, and Arthur is starting to notice things and be sensible, which is nice.

And then there are other things...

From: [identity profile] taelow.livejournal.com

Uther has been my shining light this season, actually! He's the only damn consistent character left.

And yes, Gawaine had very nice hair, I agree.

Though I still facepalm a bit at the gremlin episode, if only because everyone was stupid in it. But at least they were consistently stupid

I adore him a bit lately, I admit. It's sad, too, that he seems most reasonable and sympathetic in a season where you learn that he drowned children.

...Ugh don't talk to me about the gremlin episode. Yuck. Yesterday's episode involves Gaius and a cool person! Who is female and using magic, so I assume she's evil and Merlin will kill her.

From: [identity profile] taelow.livejournal.com

Yes, but he drowned them because he was staying true to his motivations and beliefs! And knowing that it still haunts him even though he did what he felt was 'right' makes him damn appealing as a character, rather than an evil caricature like he started out as.

Because All Women With Magic Are Evil, obvs. I'm waiting for Morgana and Morgause to transform into nasty looking trolls or something.

He did have some very nicely nuanced moments in the first season! Uther is a lovely and complex character and I want to cuddle King Giles. I've always loved him lots.

Nnnghhh it hurts. Make it stop. I want to enjoy the bits I like but the bits that annoy me are so. Augh.

Indeeeeeed

I almost wish it hadn't tried going to epic route and had stuck with just being silly, campy fun. At least then you could shrug and go 'oh Merlin' because it wasn't supposed to be serious. Now it's like ... yeah.

It is my grand theory that Nimueh was Keeper of the Plot, and by killing her, they began the derailing.

SIGH. But if it helps, I found yesterday's episode to not be as... rage-inducing as the two before it? I mean it had its stupid, but there was no Morgana in it (even though there were bits where it would make sense for her to be there) so I didn't have an opportunity to go "dagsdsadg STOP THAT"

From: [identity profile] taelow.livejournal.com

I've noticed a pattern with S3. Unless it's "Morgana Episode," she is conspicuously absent from the cast, or if she's there she shows no indicators she hates everyone ever. She's more like she should be.

I also find the eps that aren't about her tend not to enrage me.

From: [identity profile] sarcastic-kitty.livejournal.com

Dude, Merlin is crack. Completely ridiculous, sometimes hilarious crack that never makes any sense at all. I encourage watching it!

From: [identity profile] taelow.livejournal.com

It used to be hilarious crack. Now it's ventured into 'what the fucking fuck in a bad way' territory.

From: [identity profile] sarcastic-kitty.livejournal.com

I wouldn't say it's a bad way (except for evil Morgana trying to kill EVERYONE EVER). But I've always watched it for the ridiculousness of the whole thing (....and Arthur/Gwen, because what can I say? I'm addicted to shipping stuff.).

From: [identity profile] taelow.livejournal.com

My problem is that Morgana is my favourite literary character ever, so seeing her reduced to a caricature is doubly upsetting when the show treated her really well when it WAS only crack and silliness.

From: [identity profile] sarcastic-kitty.livejournal.com

I wasn't actually expecting anything else, because it's mainly a children's show. I was hoping for better, but didn't get it. I mean...sure, I can see why she turned evil, but having a grudge against EVERYONE is just plain redonkulous. She should really only hate Uther and Merlin. I'm convinced Morgause brainwashed her! It's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Now all I can hope for is that the writers don't make Gwen cheat on Arthur. Because that would suck majorly.

From: [identity profile] taelow.livejournal.com

Yeah, but ... Gwen cheating on Arthur is canon. Morgana hating the world isn't. Morgana hating Arthur and Uther is canon and I just soduobgsg

I know this isn't canon Arthurian Legend but it's just gotten to the point where it's no longer enjoyable. I can't just shrug and say 'oh Merlin'

From: [identity profile] sarcastic-kitty.livejournal.com

Not necessarily! It always kind of bugs me when people say that. Gwen cheating on Arthur is a fairly recent (....in terms of the legend, anyway) addition to the whole thing--it was added by some stupid French romance writers. A lot of the original legends really just have Gwen being Arthur's faithful wife who gets kidnapped on a regular basis and has to be rescued. She didn't do much other than that. Canon, when it comes to Arthurian legend, is just plain foggy.

Aww, see, that's what I do! I think Colin Morgan being so adorable has a lot to do with me being able to do that, though. Have you see the extended s3 trailer that was recently released?

From: [identity profile] taelow.livejournal.com

La Morte d'Arthur had Gwen cheating and that wasn't written by the French, but yeah. I know it's recent, but it's still an iconic point in the legend. Same as Morgan having Mordred with Arthur. Why did you remove my incest, Merlin? why? Not that it matters because I've never liked Gwen but yeah.

I've been watching S3 as it airs. I didn't know there was an extended trailer.

From: [identity profile] sarcastic-kitty.livejournal.com

It was never iconinc to me, but I think that's because I was obsessed with Arthurian legend as a kid, and read so many different versions of it that I knew it changed from teller to teller. Some dude named Chretien de Troyes invented Lancelot, and the affair--Malory just piggybacked on that. Before that, she ran off with Mordred, and before that she didn't cheat at all, she was just kidnapped by the jerk. And I was never a fan of the incest, either--I'm more in the camp of Mordred being the Son of Morgause/Anna and Lot and being Arthur's nephew. I was seriously confused the first time I read about Mordred being the son of Morgan and Arthur!

There is! It was released either earlier this week, I think. Or last week.

From: [identity profile] taelow.livejournal.com

I find all the nuances of Arthurian Legend fascinating and have since I was a child, yeah. It's something I've studied off and on for years, which is why I was willing to give Merlin a shot in the first place. I had to turn off all my Arthurian Legend stuff and just enjoy it, but it started off as a silly little story that was fun.

aaah, no, I've not seen it.

From: [identity profile] sarcastic-kitty.livejournal.com

I've always liked the idea of a reinvention of the legend--that's pretty much what most of the other versions of the legends are, so I mostly started watching it for that. It seems like the end of s3 is gravitating more towards elements of traditional legend, so I'm excited to see how that goes!

I'll see if I can find a link for you. It's shiny.
